Simon Stone

Simon Stone was born in 1984. His family moved from Basel to Melbourne in 1996. Simon Stone graduated from the College of Arts in Melbourne and worked as a director, author, and actor for several years. In 2007 he founded The Hayloft Project, where he directed his alterations of classical plays: "Platonov" by Chekhov, "Thyestes" by Seneca, "Spring Awakening" by Wedekind, "Little Eyolf" by Ibsen. In 2011, he became an associate director at the Belvoir St Theatre (Sydney). His remake of Ibsen's Wild Duck was shown at the Ibsen Festival in Oslo, at the Wiener Festwochen Festival (Vienna), and at the Dutch festival in Amsterdam. His first work in the German-speaking theatre was "Oresteia" by Aeschylus, staged at the Oberhausen Theatre in 2014.  

In 2015, he directed the film "The Daughter", based on Ibsen's play "Wild Duck" and featured at film festivals in Venice, Toronto, London, and Stockholm. In the 2015/16 season, Simon Stone became a director at the Basel Theatre. In 2016, his adaptation of Ibsen’s "John Gabriel Borkman" won the prestigious Nestroy Award (Austria) in the “Best Director" nomination and the Award for the Best Performance of the year from the “Theatre heute” magazine. In the same year, he participated in the Theatertreffen Festival in Berlin.
