“Anatoly Efros rightly noted that “The Marriage” is a story about deeply unhappy people. We also viewed it not so much as a comedy, but as the world’s first absurdist play. And we took some liberties, which Meyerhold had begun. I can’t say that we staged all of Gogol, as he did, but we added lines from other works, allusions to the writer’s biography, Pushkin’s poems, and transformed Gogol’s text into hexameter in one of the scenes. In general, this is a genuinely collective piece – and, by the way, this is how our theatre began”.
