The Comediaits Company (Spain)
The Comediants Company is one of the most well-known and honored in Spain.
It insists on the development and traditions of Catalonian culture. Two years ago, the group marked its 25th anniversary. The renaissance of the theater’s street lite began during the dictatorship of Franco, who forbade people to speak and write in Catalonian. The dictator also quashed any folk celebrations in Catalonia. However, the troupe went out into the squares. The actors were taken away by police and forbidden to perform, but the Comediants held their ground. Until 1989, they lived together as a large communal family and created their works together.
Today the royal family of Spain delights in their works. They were invited to participate in the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Peter Brook, Giorgio Streler, Federico Fellini and Montserrat Caballe have applauded them.
In Moscow they presented their legendary work, Demons. The theater has been performing it for almost 40 years in the most distant corners of the planet, gathering crowds of thousands of adoring viewers and winning many awards and prizes.
The list of achievements of this theater would fill an entire book. Comediants also engages in publishing, working in tandem with state organizations.
The authors of Demons described their work in Moscow:
“At the heart of the play is a ritual game of fire. It’s a hellish night. The spirits of the fire appear to our heroes. We want people to be involved in the celebration - to sing, dance, enjoy life. All of the actors playing the spirits of the fire will gather in the square at the end of the show. One will descend on a rope, another will arise from the earth, a third from somewhere else. The celebration of the game and the fire will encompass all”.
