The history of Georgian theatre is impossible to imagine without the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre. The theatre was founded in 1928 in the city of Kutaisi by Kote Marjanishvili, a great director and reformer of the Georgian theatre. Following Marjanishvili's death in 1933, the theatre was named after him. Georgian, antique, classical and modern drama are all equally at home on the Marjanishvili stage. Many of its productions, although certainly unique, are built solidly on the Georgian theatrical tradition. The Marjanishvili Theatre was invited to perform abroad as soon as the opportunity arrived. Although the successful! foreign tours are without doubt significant to the cultural life of the nation, the priority audience for the Marjanishvili Theatre is the Georgian audience.

Marjanishvili Theatre is faithful to its artistic and creative traditions, and side by side with its national dramatists rather frequently turns to the world and Russian classic. This is confirmed by two performances of the current repertoire: Eternal Husband by F.Dostoyevsky and Three Sisters by A.Chekhov. In 1996 Otar Megvinetukhutsesi, the famous Georgian theatre and film actor, became Artistic Director of the company.

Temur Chkheidze was born in Tbilisi in a famous Georgian actor's family. In 1965 he graduated from producers' faculty of Tbilisi Rustaveli State Theatre Institute. He began his creative career as a director in provincial theatre, and from 1967 at different times he worked as a director at Tbilisi Georgian Young Spectators' Teatre and at the Rustaveli Theatre. From 1981 to 1987, he was Artistic Director of Marjanishvili Theatre and since 1988 has work at this theatre as a producer. In addition to his work at the Georgian theatre, T. Chkheidze collaborates with the St. Petersburg Bolshoi Drama Theatre. He also appeared as a producer of opera performances at the St. Peterburg Maryinsky Theatre and the Milan La Scala. Prokofiev's opera The Gambler, which was recently staged by T.Chkheidze at the Maryinsky Theatre, was rewarded with Russia's main Theatre Award «The Golden Mask».
