The epic production, which involves 85 actors, brings the viewer eight centuries back in time, to the era of Sultan Baybars, whose personality still causes discussions among historians. How could a native of the Kazakh steppes of Dasht-i-Kipchak, sold into slavery as a child, become one of the greatest rulers of the Middle East? His reign was marked not only by military victories over the Mongols and Crusaders, but also by wise governance, bringing peace and stability to his citizens.
Farhat Moldagali hardly needed words. The play is staged in the genre of soundrama: the story of the great ruler is told by music. The level of emotion is largely caused by the play of musical instruments: humming and wheezing, ethnic and symphonic, powerful brass and lyrical strings; from the first seconds of the show, an exciting musical backdrop is formed. However, the music dies down when Baybars has talks with his Teacher: about freedom, power and morality, justice and the responsibility of the ruler.
Everything in “Mamluk” is done in a big way… What one can’t take away from the show is the veneration of courage and strength. Young Mamluk warriors fight masterfully in the spirit of capoeira, and their stunts with cold weapons take your breath away. Scenes in the Sultan’s harem, the muezzin’s prayer in Mecca, and traditional Kazakh dombra kuis, which sound as though between the lines, add an oriental flavor.”
