Mark Pekarsky is a legendary Russian percussionist, a creator of a new genre in modern music (percussion performance), organizer and irreplaceable director of the only constantly performing percussion ensemble in our country, in existence for over 20 years. He is the owner of an exclusive repertoire (over 200 compositions) for percussion instruments, the author of articles and books on the subject, founder of a percussion ensemble class at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the department of historic and modern musical performance, a member of the jury of international competitions (including the ARD competition in Munich).
Composers such as E. Denisov, A. Shnitke, S. Gubaidulina, A. Knaifel, V. Martynov and many others have written works for Mark Pekarsky and his ensemble.
In 1992, the Theater of Sound was created with the Mark Pekarsky Ensemble as its base. From 1993-1995, they presented a series of productions under the auspices of the Vs. Meyerhold Arts Center. One of these, «А Hotel Room in the City of NN» (dir. Valery Fokin) was awarded the highest Russian theater prize, the Golden Mask (1994) and the State Prize of Russia (1995). The production toured Paris (1993) and Berlin (1995).
