The theatre was created in 1977. Today, it is one of the most interesting ballet troupes. The goal of the theatre - creation of a new style which would be a synthesis of classical and modern dancing, philosophy, and dramatic art. In his creative work Boris Eifman refers to problems common to all the mankind, philosophical as well as moral, trying to understand and express the inner world of man, to penetrate into the mysteries of the man's psychology. The unique repertoire of the theatre has formed a special type of the actor - these are dancers-actors combining fine technique and a gift of transformation. Its corps de ballet is well known for its excellence.

Boris Eifman graduated from the choreo­graphic department of the Leningrad Conservatory in 1972. From 1970 to 1977 he was a balletmaster of the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Ballets staged after works of world literature classics occupy an important place in Eifman's creative work: The Idiot — the first, at the Russian ballet stage, recourse to Dostoevsky's work, Duel (after Kuprin's story). The Master and Margarita (according to Bulgakov's novel) Therese Raquin (after Zola's novel)... Eifman's performances are characterized by the tension of dramatic collisions, expressiveness of movement, inexhaustible ingenuity of stage solutions, by a wealth and symbolism of choreographic language. Boris Eifman is the producer/director of more than 40 ballets. Among his latest world-famed works are: Requiem, Chaikovsky, Don Quixote, The Brothers Karamazov.
