The Carnival Viarejio (Italy)

Triumph of Life, Triumph of Carnival, Triumph of Matches – these are only some of the triumphs celebrated by the most colorful, the craziest, the most surprising carnival in Europe. In 1873 just nearby the magnificent, splendid Venetian Carnival, in a small cozy seaside town of Viarejio quite different festival was born - wild and jolly, ironical and prankish.

Since then every February on weekends not only local people turn out into the street, but the friends of exotic things from all over the world never fail to come. The festivals of Viarejio are great not only in their quality, but in their «quantity» as well: the main attribute of this Carnival that makes it unique are huge dolls going around the town in special wagons. Tractors and special platforms pull up-to-30-meter-high dolls. Giant dolls make people going alongside look like small colored bright beads spilled around.

The Carnival in Viarejio is actually popular, full of joy. It is the world turned upside down, in which 3-meter-high dolls of politics and other celebrities dance in tune with simple music of pavement bands.

The figure of flying Arleccino on the embankment has been the symbol of such a really popular festival for many decades. It reminds that the Carnival is to come sooner or later, and on the days of people’s feast it celebrates the Triumph of Life it has lived to see.
