The Djambe-Boys

The Djambe-Boys
The Djambe-Boys
Belgium

Have you ever found yourself stuck stone-still most foolishly in the middle of a busy street fr om seeing a wonder? If not, you should consider going to the Belgian city of Antwerp and roam its squares - you can not fail to see the wonder it has to offer. Somewhere on a fountain parapet you will certainly find a small boy and his dad, playing the authentic African drums. These are real street musicians, or better say just real musicians. The older member of the duet is Etienne Deruelle, who holds in his hands the main skeleton of the rhythm. The younger player - Hevair Deruelle - literally embroiders this canvas with unimaginable patterns, full of various hints and nuances. His captivating drum will not let go of the listener, as sounds fr om his small but very fast hands pearl over the square, making the audience give in to the rhythm, making them dance, shake their bodies in time and burst with applause.

These people receive no grants from municipalities or ministries - they earn their living with their wonderful art. No matter how it goes with the earnings, but there is usually no lim it to the delight of the listeners, just as there is no lim it to the talent of the young musician who has the honor of opening the Third World Olympics in Moscow. We want to believe that Moscow will receive him cordially - for he is so excited!
