Hotel Modern Theatre Company (the Netherlands)

Directed and performed by Pauline Kalker and Arlene Hoornweg, featuring artist/performer Herman Helle in collaboration with composers Arthur Sauer and Ruud van der Pluijm.

The production uses a live broadcasting on the screen of what is happening in the miniature film set built on stage. All of the material objects – models and layouts are made by the artists and the authors of the show.

The Dutch theatre company Hotel Modern performs around the world – from Tokyo to New York – Using scale models, miniature cameras and music, creating vivid visual histories. The main participants of the company are actors and theatre directors Pauline Kalker and Arlen Hoornweg, as well as artist/performer Herman Helle. They often collaborate with composers Arthur Sauer and Ruud van der Pluijm.

The first night of the production “Great war" took place just before the Moscow theatre Olympics in 2001. It is dedicated to the war of 1914-1918 years. Millions died in fire and mud. Millions came home with stories that could not be told or listened to.

In the live animation “movie” Hotel Modern made the experience of these soldiers tangible. The theatre turned into a puppet set. The audience witnessed the reconstruction of the landscape of the Western Front on a miniature scale. Potting soil, parsley, and rusty nails were in the matter. These images and sounds are alternated with oral evidence and authentic letters written by soldiers in trenches.
