The Greys

The Natural Theatre Company has been making people laugh since 1969. It has participated in many major festivals, including Edinburgh, Munich and Athens. As the director of the New Zealand festival said: “Now Wellington really knows for sure that the Festival has happened”. In recent years the troupe has toured extensively relative to other companies in Great Britain, playing South America, Canada, Japan, China, Germany and Scandinavia.

The troupe specializes in amusing, unique and accessible theater for all. For many, the words «street theater» mean clowns and fire-eaters. The Natural Theatre Company doesn’t perform, but rather shows people with very specific characters in funny situations.

Often its members appear without announcement and simply joke with passers by. Little by little, people start to notice the eccentric behavior of the «naturals» and start to point at them and laugh. Soon, all movement on the street stops and the audience becomes part of the show. «Pink Suitcases» was such a show, with passers by help­ing a «lost tourist», joining him on a walk through the neighborhood.

Others plays are based on mismatching. For example, «Cone Heads» is about armed aligns arriving with absolutely wrong information about Earth. Sometimes, the performances are based on a visually unreal concept, such as «The Residents of the Flower Part». They do everyday things but look very strange and out of place.

No matter what the script (and the troupe has over 100), the actors always find original roles and their characters and images are always recognizable. The cast and plays create an atmosphere of excitement, curiosity and delight.

Thе members of the Natural Theatre Company often interact loudly with real life on the street, overcoming language barriers and the surprise of passers by. They always become the center of gravity, both for the public and the press. The talented perform­ers of this company are always coming up with new ideas and visions, always the least expected - and often this often makes their performances special and unique.
