The Vilnius Small Theatre was formed in 1990 by Rimas Tuminas, together with a group of actors he was working with at the State Lithuanian Drama Theatre. Today the Small Theatre consists of thirty-four people, seventeen of whom are actors. The company has participated in several drama festivals, among which were 'Baltic Spring' (1991) and 'Kontakt' (1993,1995,1997), and performed in Finland, Sweden, Ukraine, Poland and Iceland. The Masquerade has become the best performance of the season in Lithuania.
Rimas Tuminas was born in 1952 in Kelme. He studied theatre direction at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, after which he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Theatrical Art. From 1979 to 1990 Tumanis was with the State Lithuanian Drama Theatre. His performances at the Small Theatre won him the National Award. Rimas Tumanis has produced and directed over 18 plays with various Lithuanian companies and abroad. His The Masquerade collected the Grand Prix of the Contact-97 Festival at Torun, Poland.
