The exquisite work of the puppeteers, the puppets with their arrestingly expressive faces, the innovative animation – all this takes us directly to the hero’s childhood and adolescence experiences, to his dreams and continual fears. There is no distinctive Russian flair in this production of the Milagros Company, wherefore the dialogues (“Buenos Dias, Petrovitch”, “Buenos Dias, Akakievitch”) at times sound rather funny. Meanwhile, the distinctive Russian compassion for the little man is strongly present not just as a social statement, but also as an effective metaphor
