Bodytorium (Netherlands)
Artistic Director Shusaku Takeuchi (netherlands)

Shusaku Takeuchi was born in Japan but has lived in Holland for years. At university in Japan he studied painting, sculpture and graphic art. There he formed a group of young artists who put on exhibits and participated in artistic endeavors. After travelling around Europe in 1972, he settled in the Netherlands. He became interested in modern dance. During the mid-70’s, he created his international dance theater Shusaku&Dormu.

“The most important observation I made when I came to western Europe was about the way Europe viewed the East. Europeans saw it as something exotic. That was not satisfactory to me. I got together a group of 20 people of various nationalities. I was interested in human instincts that we all share in common. They differ due to traditions, history, language and countries”. Shusaku chose Holland as a place to live, and not by accident: it is a country interested in modern dance and one that is surprisingly humane toward those with physical disabilities. Such people, noted the choreographer, live, not isolated from society as in Japan, but out in the open. In his childhood Shusaku did not speak for a long period of time, and he pays special attention to those who have somehow been set apart by nature. He believes that “the wonderful need not necessarily be beautiful; one can express the inner harmony of a person without being limited to the exterior”.

In 1989, his group participated in the World Caravan festival of street theater in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where they performed the expressive choreographic show, «4ngel» in the style of modern dance. The choreographer himself danced the title role. Stjusaku’ Takeuchi can perform in a field, at an old factory, near a bridge, in ruins, orj the beach, in a church.

In the beginning of the 90’s he organized a new group Bodytorium.

His choreography is based not on the classical school, which is why it has a democratic spirit. One needn’t have a ballet education to be asked into his troupe. On this trip, Shusaku is planning to invite 36 Russian students, young actors and dancers to perform with the actors of Boditorium on Revolution Square in The Package.

Since the 1990’s, he has been moving away from his role as a performer and focusing on directing and choreography. Shusaku Takeuchi is one of the most recognized and requested ballet masters in Holland. He devotes less time to street theater but, having received the invitation from Polunin to take place in his street program, Shusaku decided to accept and to unveil his new ideas in Moscow.

The show that he performed in Moscow was about the dreams of people: “А man received an old parcel. He doesn’t know from whom. When he opens it, he sees a white paper on which nothing is written. This is the beginning of his daydreams”.
