Alejandro Gonzalez Puche is a teacher, playwright, and theatre director.
Born in Bogotá, Alejandro graduated with honors from the Directing Department of the State Institute of Theatrical Arts (GITIS) in Moscow in 1991. A student of Anatoly Vasiliev, he worked as an actor at the School of Dramatic Art theatre after graduating. He holds a Doctorate and Master's degree in Advanced Latin American Studies from the University of Valencia, Spain, where he studied until 2009.
From 1998 to 2006, Alejandro was the artistic director of the Teatro del Valle. Specializing in the Golden Age of Spanish theatre, he staged plays by Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Lope de Vega, and Miguel de Cervantes. In collaboration with the Colombian Symphony Orchestra, he carried out several productions for musical theatre, including the oratorios "Ivan the Terrible" by S. Prokofiev and "Joan of Arc at the Stake" by P. Claudel and A. Honegger, and a stage version of "Carmina Burana" by C. Orff. Alejandro has directed plays in various cities around the world, including Russia: "Jesus" by Virgilio Piñera at the Kinoakter Theatre (Yekaterinburg), "The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother" by Gabriel García Márquez at the Burdrama Theatre (Ulan-Ude), "Hopscotch" by Julio Cortázar at the Benefis Theatre (Moscow), and others.
Alejandro Puche's productions have been presented at numerous international festivals and toured in Colombia and abroad: China, Russia, USA, Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and other countries.
Alejandro is also actively involved in teaching. He directed the National School of Dramatic Art in Bogotá and has worked as a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Chile and the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. He is the author of several plays and monographs on the history and theory of theatre. Currently, together with Professor Ma Zhen Hong, he directs the Univalle Stage Laboratory and teaches at the Universidad del Valle.
In 2010, Alejandro Puche was awarded the Order of the Ministry of Culture of Colombia for his services to culture.
Ma Zhen Hong holds a Doctorate and Master's degree in Hispanic Philology from the University of Valencia (2009) and is a professor in the Department of Performing Arts at the Universidad del Valle.
She graduated from the Directing Department of the State Institute of Theatrical Arts (GITIS, 1993), studying under Pyotr Fomenko, with whom she collaborated on the production of the play "Wolves and Sheep."
In 2000, Ma Zhen Hong, as a visiting professor, conducted a seminar on Chekhov's dramaturgy at the Central Academy of Dramatic Arts in Beijing. In her department, she has directed such masterpieces of world drama as Goldoni's "The Mistress of the Inn," Pirandello's "Henry IV," Gogol's "The Government Inspector," Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," and Dostoevsky's "The Double."
Within the framework of the projects of the Stage Arts Laboratory of the University of Valle, she created the performances "The Imaginary Astrologer," "Peter and the Wolf," "Uncle Vanya," "Dialogue of the Dogs," and "Othello."
Her internationally recognized productions include "Molière" by the Mexican playwright Sabina Berman at the Central Academy of Dramatic Arts in Beijing (China, 2008) and "Princess Turandot" (2012) at the Kamal Theatre in Kazan.
United by a long-standing creative partnership, Alejandro Puche and Ma Zhen Hong will deliver a joint lecture on the trends that have shaped contemporary Colombian theatre, discussing playwrights, directors, theatre groups, and festivals. They will also talk about the connections between the Russian theatrical tradition and Colombian stage life.
