Theatre in the Gulf Countries
Kalthoom Amin is a theatre director, choreographer, and theatre consultant for the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Arts of Bahrain.

She began her studies in Paris at the ESRA film school and further honed her theatrical skills at the University of Paris and in the workshop of Alain Ilil. Since 1999, her name has been inextricably linked with Bahrain, where she founded and leads a permanent acting workshop, generously sharing her experience. Her teaching activities span a wide geographical area, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and other countries. Her award-winning directorial and choreographic works grace the stages of Bahrain and Jordan. She is also a recognized expert in the theatre world and has served on juries for prestigious festivals in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. In 2023, her contribution to theatrical art was recognized with an award from the Bahrain Theatre Union in honor of International Theatre Day.

In her lecture, Kalthoom Amin will discuss the history of theatre in the Gulf countries. She will explore the similar origins, common features uniting theatre in this region, and its subsequent development – from its beginnings in schools to international festivals and the creation of the Arab Theatre Union. Amin will explain how folklore, traditions, and social life have influenced the theatrical traditions of each country. The lecture will be complemented by video excerpts from performances.
