We all scream in delirium when happiness slips away. These are weird screams. It was precisely Chekhov who made me aware of all that is inherent in them – the amazing ludicrousness and affected dramatics.

As I was teaching at the National School this transition occurred and it proved to be so wide-scale, powerful and traumatic that it let me carry on in the company of Marie-Therese Fortin and put on the Chekhovian production at Le Théâtre du Trident. I am very grateful to her. Likewise I am grateful to those actors and actresses who agreed to remain ‘the Lebanese Quebecers’ as they played the text written by a Russian. I thank them for having accepted the challenge and not trying to act out the Russians. None of us has ever been to Russia so we don’t have the right to pose ourselves as experts.
