17th Chekhov Festival opens at State Kremlin Palace
The opening ceremony of the 17th International Chekhov Theatre Festival took place on the stage of the State Kremlin Palace. Audiences were treated to the long-awaited production "Poetic Dance: A Journey Through a Legendary Landscape" by the Group of Eastern Performing Arts from China.
The opening was attended by Alexey Fursin, Head of the Moscow Department of Culture; H.E. Zhang Hanhui, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Russia; H.E. Héctor Isidro Arenas Neira, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Colombia to Russia; as well as renowned directors, theatre managers and other distinguished guests.
The Festival will run until 25 July. The World Series programme features 13 performances from 12 countries. In addition, the Festival includes the Moscow Programme and the Educational Programme. The Regional Programme will take place in Voronezh, Kazan and Yekaterinburg. On 9 June, an open-air photography exhibition, "Theatre Arts of the BRICS Countries within the Chekhov Festival", will open on Arbat Street in Moscow.
The 17th International Chekhov Theatre Festival is held with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Moscow Government, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and the Moscow Department of Culture.
