The first performance of "Brás Cubas" – a stage adaptation of the novel by Brazilian literary classic Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis – has taken place as part of the Chekhov Festival. The production, directed by Paulo de Moraes and staged by the theatre company Armazém (Brazil), was presented on the stage of the Yermolova Moscow Drama Theatre. Two further performances are scheduled for 1 and 2 July.
"Brás Cubas" is a bold and original reading of Machado de Assis's brilliant novel The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (also translated as Epitaph of a Small Winner). The authors have transformed the novel's complex psychological realism into a captivating stage piece, in which the protagonist shares the story of his life – beginning from the moment of his death. The scenography, lighting and live music combine to create a memorable atmosphere that transports audiences back to the 19th century. With this production, Armazém celebrates its 35th anniversary.
The production was successfully presented in autumn 2024 in Vladivostok, at the 3rd International Pacific Theatre Festival.
